“I was really proud of him,” said coach Rob Pittman. “I thought he would shoot around that score but I wasn’t sure it would hold up. The course was playing tough, it was not playing easy.”
Hernandez finished tied for fifth in the Class 1 golf tournament, while the Northumberland High School team was the state runner-up. Auburn High School was 31 strokes better than the Indians with a team score of 310 to earn the state crown.
The Indians shot a 344 as the second-place team with Middlesex High School of the Tidewater District placing third with a score of 351. The Indians, as the Region 1A tournament champion, and the Chargers, as the regional runner-up, had both advanced as teams. Hernandez and teammate Tyler Brent qualified as individuals.
