High school art show returns to the limelight

The Friends of the Northumberland Library will host a reception for this year’s Northumberland High School Art Show from 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, June 2, at the Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

The Arts Alive Friday! reception will welcome the June exhibit directed by art teacher Eddie Barnes. There will be a variety of works representing a range of projects conducted at the school, he said.

“We will exhibit pieces from our studio painting and sculpture classes and we will have works from our graphic design students, including photography,” said Barnes.

These works use various media, including water color, oils, pen and ink, color pencil, plaster, ceramics and construction paper. The styles are also varied. Students have studied art forms from different cultures and eras, he added.

Barnes, who recently was named Teacher of the Year, selected the pieces based on the critiques the students perform at the conclusion of every project assignment.

“I involve the students to make judgments based on set criteria as to why one art piece may be more effective than another. This effort is helpful in their growth as artists,” he said.

Students, parents and teachers are invited to the reception. Finger food and nonalcoholic beverages will be served.
