Classic Broadway hits never heard before will fill the stage of the Lancaster Middle School Theater November 19 as New York City improv musicians perform “Broadway’s Next Hit Musical Presents the Phony Awards.” The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts On Stage series.
“How long has it been since you’ve had a really good laugh?” asked president Rita Grinbergs. “Or recalled the thrilling songs and storylines of your favorite Broadway musicals? Well, this show will have you doing both. The songs may sound familiar, but they are completely improvised based on audience suggestions.”
The first half of the show is a glamorous awards show, hosted by emcee Drew Lausch. His favorite targets for playful ribbing and snarky references are recent shows from Broadway, and the cast—Rob Schiffmann, Deb Rabbai, Jeff Scherer and Heidi Gleichauf—who present three audience-generated song titles as “nominated songs” for the coveted Phony Award. Cast members create spontaneous scenes and songs filled with dancing and melodies.
