John S. Hardy

WHITE STONE— John S. Hardy, 84, crossed over the bar on September 26, 2019.

Born in Boston, and raised in New England, Jack loved “messing about in boats.” He managed to feed this passion by joining the Navy as a submariner and working in the marine industry for most of his career.

He and his wife, Betsy, were never too far from the water and raised their boys, Rob, John and Steve, first in Cohasset and then in Chatham, Mass.

Jack will be missed greatly by his only granddaughter, Grace; and seven grandsons, Dana, Sam, Ben, Jake, Will, Jack and Nick.

His extended family recently grew by two, with the birth of two great-grandsons, George and Fin. He had many nieces and nephews that he held dear and he formed many great friendships throughout his life.

Jack and Betsy discovered White Stone, Virginia, on their many cruises south and dropped anchor there in 2003; they hosted many memorable family gatherings at Catawba Farm in the years that followed and made many dear friends in the area.

A Mayflower descendant, Jack will be buried at the Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury, Mass.

Donations in Jack’s name may be made to The Animal Welfare League, Box 975, White Stone, VA 22578; or Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
