Joseph R. O. ‘JR’ Cox

HEATHSVILLE—Joseph Robert Olanden “JR” Cox of Heathsville died April 5, 2021.

JR was born August 2, 1980, to Shirley Cox (Foster) in Washington, D.C. He was nurtured by Monroe and Evelyn Peterson.

JR moved to Virginia at the age of 3 and attended Lancaster and Northumberland public schools. During his time at Northumberland High School, JR participated in the JROTC Program. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated member of the youth usher board and the Sunbeam and Celestial Choir.

He was a carpenter who perfected his craft with Mike Ogburn. He also become a DJ (2nd Chance).

In November 2009, JR received a heart transplant from David Fetty. As a result, he gained and developed a strong bond with an extended family headed by Karen Fetty.

JR is survived by his lifetime partner, Karen Noel; mother, Shirley Foster; siblings, Alex Peterson, Marya Ford, Ashley Peterson, Mary Vaughan, Donald Vaughan, Mark Fetty, Stephen Fetty, Jonathan Fetty and Grace Shey; and children, Jamell Cottrell, Elvin Cottrell, DeQuine Johnson, and Neveah Carter.

He was predeceased by siblings Cedric Cox and Tameika Cox.

A funeral was held Friday, April 9, at Calvary Baptist Church, Kilmarnock.
