STAUNTON—Kathleen “Kit” Genevieve O’Keeffe McCloskey, 66, of Staunton passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Brookdale Staunton.
She was born on December 1, 1956, in Plainfield, New Jersey, a devoted daughter of George Thomas and Judith Joanne Cairns McCloskey of Kilmarnock. The oldest of six children, she lived with her family in various locations across the world, including Turkey, Vietnam, Bolivia and Guatemala.
Kit received her bachelor’s from Loyola University in New Orleans and a master’s in archaeology from LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2013 after 25 years of service.
A voracious reader, she never missed an issue of The New Yorker or her favorite Sunday newspaper, The Washington Post. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and experimenting with different culinary techniques in the kitchen. Kit had a quiet, calm, and comforting presence; always available for deep and interesting conversation. She was a nurturing mother, grandmother, and friend to many.
In addition to her loving mother, she is survived by her son, Samuel Edward Vincent and his wife, Sarah DiFlorio Vincent of Staunton; her daughter, Cecilia Evangeline Vincent of Staunton; her grandsons, Atticus Lee Rankin and William Edward “Will” Vincent, both of Staunton; her brothers, Christopher Thomas McCloskey (Carolyn) of Fairfax and Matthew Ian McCloskey (Yuliya) of Wiesbaden, Germany; and her sisters, Patricia Maureen McCloskey-Favre of Kilmarnock, Megan Eileen McCloskey Norris (Frank) of Woodbridge and Brigid Mary McCloskey Price (Bill) of Hartfield. Nieces and nephews include Daniel McCloskey (Ashley), Rebecca Martin (Blake), M.J. Favre III, Joshua Favre (Thuy), Colleen Norris, Blake Shati, Reilly Price, and one great-niece, Layla Favre.
She is preceded in death by her father.
The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, July 2, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at Henry Funeral Home with Father Nicholas Hartman officiating.
The family thanks the medical staff of UVA University Hospital, Brookdale Staunton and Legacy Hospice.
Arrangements are being handled by Henry Funeral Home in Staunton.
