LANCASTER—Kay Wooten Micklem passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2023. She was 85 years old. Born in Wilson, N.C. on January 29, 1938, Kay was the only child of William and Maude Wooten.
Kay was a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, formerly known as Women’s College, where she earned a degree in business.
She married Colbert F. Micklem on September 10, 1960. Together they had three children, Betsy (David) Blanks, Bloomington, Ill., Michael (Kelly) Micklem, Roanoke, and Mary-Howard (Keith) Wrenn, Huddleston. Kay and Colbert were married for 62 years and 10 months.
Kay, or as everyone knew her as Mama, is survived by her husband, children, their spouses, and six grandchildren.
Mama was a devoted, loving wife and mother. It was her strong Christian faith that carried her through life’s ups and downs. A stranger to no one, Mama engaged in conversation with everyone she met. By doing so, she touched the lives of many. Kay spoke her mind, and you always knew where you stood with her. She brought love, warmth, kindness and hospitality to those who knew her, and she will be missed by her family, friends and acquaintances.
The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the many people who showed their overwhelming love and support, caring and comfort in Mama’s final days.
A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 13, at Campbell Presbyterian Church, Weems. The family will receive visitors with a church reception following the service.
Cremation rights and floral arrangements are being handled by Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
