For 28 years, the Kid’s Closet has served a critical need in the lower Northern Neck. The consignment store specifically offered children’s clothes, toys and maternity clothes—hard to find items in Lancaster and Northumberland counties.
After nearly three decades, sisters Bonnie Hall and Marian Nash will retire and close the store on December 16.
“The most fun, really, has been watching all the children grow up,” said Hall. “We still have people come back and say ‘When I was little I remember coming in here and getting a toy or some clothes.’”
The store at 5458 Jessie duPont Memorial Highway in Wicomico Church got its start on Main Street in Kilmarnock. Betsy Crowther and Susan Jett owned the store for about six months before Hall and her daughter, Amy Goddard, bought it.
“I kept the name and all of their consignors,” said Hall. Over the years, that consignor list has exploded to over 1,200, with about 400 to 500 very active consignors.
“They started out bringing in clothes [to sell] as moms, then they’d disappear for a while, and then they came back as grandmothers….
