Lady Devils split net matches, 1-1

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Lancaster went 1-1 against Tidewater District teams King & Queen and West Point last week in varsity volleyball.

The Lady Devils swept King & Queen, 3-0, last Tuesday with wins of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-13. Rachel Valdrighi led the servers with nine aces and on defense had four digs.

Maddie Davis put over four kills and setter Riley Molineaux had nine assists.

Davis had 11 serves for points and McKenzie Hathaway had 11 digs to lead Lancaster last Thursday in a 3-0 loss at West Point. The Pointers came away with wins of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-16.

Molineaux put up seven assists with Sydney Price getting above the net for three blocks.

“We have gotten much better in terms of moving the ball around offensively and getting blocks, which was one of our biggest goals in the off season,” said LHS coach Keegan Walters following the West Point loss. “We had a couple of situations [against West Point] where we went on big runs to come back and tie the game, but then let the air out of our sails again. We know we can compete, but we need to put together a full 25-point game.”

The varsity Lady Devils are now 3-2 with a match at Washington & Lee tonight, September 14.

Junior varsity

In JV action last week, Lancaster picked up a pair of 2-0 sweeps, beating King & Queen, 25-7 and 25-7, and West Point, 25-11 and 25-14.

Katherine Thomas had 11 aces and Madison Giese had six digs to lead the Lady Devils against King & Queen.

Thomas also led behind the service line against West Point with 10 aces. She added three digs and Blair Smith had five digs.

Rachel Woolard led in the middle with eight sets and Kat Zeiler put over four kills.
