Lancaster County plans for future of broadband authority

As Lancaster County moves toward implementation on broadband projects, members of the broadband authority—along with the board of supervisors—met February 4 with Robert Bridgham, executive director of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Broadband Authority (ESVBA), to understand its structure and mission.

Bridgham said the project began in 2008, mostly based on the needs of NASA and their Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore. It expanded from there to address the digital divide of Accomack and Northampton counties. Bridgham said the project started with “a backbone beginning on the northern edge of the Eastern Shore near the Maryland border, across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge -Tunnel to Virginia Beach.”

To date, they have installed about 600 miles…
