A couple of Region A cross country superstars added a fourth regional championship each to their resumes last Wednesday on the trails at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg.
Lancaster High School harrier Hailey Smith ran the 3.1-mile race in 21:08 to lead 39 runners as the individual medalist of the girls Class 1 Region A race. It was Smith’s fourth straight regional championship. She cut almost a minute and a half off her winning time in last spring’s 2020 region race. She won that in 22:24. It’s also only been a short six months since she last ran in the Class 1 meet, held in late April because of the Virginia High School League’s abbreviated seasons. She finished fourth in that meet and will seek her first state championship Saturday, November 11, in Salem.
Mathews High School harrier Cameron Stearns claimed his fourth straight regional medal with a time of 17:47 in the boys race.
The entire LHS boys and girls teams will advance to the Class 1 race….
