Lancaster volunteer tutors and their students recognized at ice cream social

Lancaster County Public School (LCPS) volunteer tutors and students recently were recognized at a division-wide program and ice cream social.

Volunteer tutor coordinator Sandy Armstrong led the program and shared how a common vision originating with community and school leaders three years ago has become a large, successful program serving numerous students in grades K-12.

So far this year, 68 volunteer tutors have been screened, trained and assigned to work with 165 students, said Armstrong. Volunteer tutors/mentors, teachers, school staff members and administrators all working together as a team have encouraged students to become more successful both in and out of the classroom.  Assistant superintendent Dan Russell and Armstrong expressed their gratitude on behalf of the school division to all of the many volunteer tutors who share their time and expertise with the students.

“It was further noted that a program such as the LCPS Volunteer Tutoring Program could only be possible in a community with people as generous and thoughtful as ours,” said Armstrong.

Volunteers include Katie Bavuso, Rose Mary Bland, Joyce Bombay, Virginia Lee Brown, Cathy Bryant, Jimmie Carter, Mozell Carter, Marsha Chapman, Tom Chapman, Nancy Chilton, Sherri Clowser, Susanna Collins, Anne Costello, Charlie Costello, Hazel Farmer, Rich Ferraro, Lex Forrester, Suzanne Gallagher, Julia Geier, William Gesell, Sharon Gill and Emily Griffin.
