Lancaster wins two gold medals in district wrestling tournament

Westmoreland had seven gold medalists in 14 weight classes to score 269 points and win the team trophy in the Northern Neck District wrestling tournament on January 31. 

Essex was the runner-up with 183 points; Lancaster third, 142; and Northumberland fourth, 114. 

The host Red Devils had two gold medalists in 132-pound Ashby Russell and 165-pound Albert “AP” Pollard. Both went undefeated at 3-0 in the tournament. Pollard recorded three pins and Russell, one. 

“I’ve had some tough losses this season, matches that I shouldn’t have lost,” said Russell. “I decided to take a step back and reinvent my approach. Now I’m more focused and wrestling smarter and I’m starting to see it pay off.”
