Learn about an oyster sanctuary on Carter Creek

Neighbors in the watershed are invited to join Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), W.E. Kellum Seafood and Albert Pollard Jr. at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury (RWC) to celebrate the newest oyster sanctuary on the Eastern Branch of Carter Creek.

The event will take place at 5 p.m. April 15; light refreshments will be included. Watershed education demonstrations will be provided by students from Chesapeake Academy and guests will have an opportunity to hear from Friends of the Rappahannock, W.E. Kellum Seafood president Tommy Kellum and Pollard as they discuss the benefits of thriving oyster reefs and the oyster’s connection to improving water quality conditions in Carter Creek and the Rappahannock River.

“I’m happy to do my part by donating the oyster shore and working with such great partners to keep Carter’s Creek fishable and swimmable. The project dovetails nicely with RWC’s recent investment in their wastewater treatment facilities with state-of-the-art technology,” said Pollard.

The new reef is just upstream from Gaskins Wharf….
