The Lancaster Elementary School cafeteria on March 21 was humming with excitement as 67 students met their chaperones, whisked up their goodie bags filled with snacks and water, and boarded two charter buses to Washington, D.C.
Everyone was ready to explore museums, monuments and memorials. For some this was a monumental trip as they had never been to the nation’s capital. For others, it was the first time they saw a train or a plane taking off at Reagan National Airport. It was indeed a day full of “firsts.”
Chatter and excitement filled the buses as we approached D.C. Sites were pointed out, “on the left is the Pentagon. See the spot where the stone is a different color? That’s where the plane crashed on 9/11. Over there is the Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin. See the Washington Monument straight ahead.” You could almost feel the excitement mounting the closer we got to….
