LHS fields young, solid cross country teams

Mathews High School won both the girls and boys cross country races at a multi-school meet hosted by Lancaster September 20 on the course at Hills Quarter in Kilmarnock. 

The Blue Devils have a combined 30-plus runners on their two teams and produced the individual medalist in both races. 

Sophomore Lauren Johnson won the girls race in 22:32 and led MHS to a team low 22 points. Lancaster was second with 36 points, while Westmoreland and Northumberland did not compete on the team level. The Eagles had four runners and Northumberland three. Five are needed for team scoring. 

Senior Andrew Greve blew by the competition to win the boys race in 18:24. Mathews runners claimed the first eight spots and scored a low 15 points to win the race. Greve led a field of 43 runners that included three junior varsity runners. Lancaster was the team runner-up with 52 points. Westmoreland was third with 85 and Northumberland fourth, 102.
