At a recent Lancaster County Lions Club (LCLC) dinner meeting at the Compass Entertainment Complex, three Lancaster Middle School students were honored as the winners of the 2023 LCLC Peace Poster Contest.

Lions Club International conducts the Peace Poster Contest yearly with age eligible students from across the world competing. Locally, the contest is managed under the supervision of Lancaster Middle School art teacher Marilyn Sprouse and LCLC Lions Eileen Tullner and Mike Petty.

The theme was “Dare to Dream.” Starting in October, the students were led in guided talks about peace along with a lot of brainstorming, said Lion Jim Ward, publicist. They were then challenged to create a poster describing their thoughts and feelings about peace and how they Dared to Dream for the future, and then to write an essay describing their poster and thoughts.

All the students were very involved and invested in the topic and the project, said Ward. Over 90 posters were created by age eligible students.

After some deliberation, the winners were selected. Zoie Craft won first place; Cassie Gaskins, second; and Susana Geier, third. Craft also won the district competition and went on to the state finals. “We were all very proud of Zoie,” said Ward.

Lion Petty awarded Geier $50, Gaskins $75 and Craft $100, while the students’ parents and loved ones cheered, he said.
