KILMARNOCK—The Kilmarnock Town Council has officially proclaimed Friday, July 24, Carroll Lee Ashburn Day, in recognition of decades of community service.
On Monday, July 20, friends, family and colleagues gathered in the council chambers to honor Ashburn.
He was born and raised in Lancaster County and has always had a deep respect and connection with the community and the people surrounding him. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Following four years of service he came home and spent over 40 years selling automobiles for T. D. McGinnes, a Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership in Kilmarnock.
Ashburn also had a career in radio spanning over two decades, broadcasting area high school sports competitions, most notably his legendary basketball coverage alongside Demetrius Means.
In 1997, Ashburn joined the Kilmarnock Museum. It didn’t take long for him to be elected president of the museum, a title he still wears with pride.
