THE PLAINS—Lloyd Mason Shelton Jr., known affectionately to all as “Butch” or “Poppy,” age 77, of The Plains passed away tragically on July 18, 2026.
His life was cut short when he was struck by a drunk driver while vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C.. Though his passing brings immense heartbreak, his family chooses to remember the incredible warmth, kindness and light he brought into the world.
Butch was born on March 9, 1949, in Richmond, a son of the late Lloyd Mason Shelton and Louise Gaines Shelton. Raised in Weems, Butch always had a generous spirit and an easygoing nature. He loved growing up in the Northern Neck and telling tales about his youthful experiences there.
Butch attended Virginia Commonwealth University before building a life centered around hard work and community connection. He began his career working at Virginia Tractor in Richmond and later spent a few months in Sierra Leone selling heavy equipment. He then moved to The Plains and channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into owning and operating his own successful excavating business, Shelton Davis Inc., as well as a trucking business, Sheldan Trucking. He was also an active member of the Land Improvement Contractors of America, earning the respect of colleagues for his integrity and skill.
To know Butch was to love him. He was a truly wonderful man—kind-hearted, good-natured and genuinely loved by everyone who crossed his path. He possessed a rare ability to make people feel instantly at ease. His favorite way to spend time was surrounded by family, soaking in his favorite role as a proud “Poppy.” When he wasn’t with his family, you could find him on the golf course, sharing laughs and a good game with his buddies. Even in the face of life’s challenges, Butch lived by a simple philosophy: everything is going to be alright. That enduring optimism is the lasting legacy he leaves behind for his family and friends to carry forward.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Gloria Jean Shelton; his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Kevin Lee; and his two cherished grandchildren, Cameron and Callaway Lee.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the First Responders and Good Samaritans who assisted at the scene, and whose life saving efforts and compassionate care will never be forgotten.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 14, at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton.
