In 1950, during my first two years of high school in Fairfax, I met Rita Overly. She attended school nearby in Falls Church. I met her at a party. She was gorgeous, pleasant and easy to talk to. I asked her out several times including the movies and to a formal dance at the Shoreham Hotel in D.C.

I was smitten, but I’m not sure it was reciprocated. Anyway, Rita’s father was in the National Park Service and soon after we met he was transferred to Port Angeles, Washington, to be the Olympic National Park superintendent, so that mistakenly seemed like it for Rita and me.
