KILMARNOCK—Louis Dolman Shelton, 90, of Kilmarnock died on February 1, 2024.
He was born on July 25, 1933, in Lancaster County to Lewis Edward and Gazelle Clarke Shelton. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon Military Academy and worked on the water in his youth.
Louis was predeceased by his parents; and his wife of 35 years, Mildred Clingan Shelton.
Louis is survived by his sisters, Lillian S. Cox of Gloucester and Hazel S. Farmer (John) of Irvington; his sons, Louis Dennis Shelton (Marian) of Alfonzo and Billy Harcum (Jenny) of Naples, Fla.; and daughter, Karen Zongolowicz of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Emory “Emmy” Ryan (Mike) of Alexandria, Louis Benjamin Shelton of Lancaster, Jill Zongolowicz of Roanoke and Joseph Zongolowicz of Chesapeake; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Nicole Shelton of Callao.
Louis served two years in the US Army and was stationed in Japan. Upon return and discharge, he went back to work on the water for many years with his father, and then finally on his own. He was a long time manager at Cobran in Lively. He became an optician in his later years, working with many in the community at the Northern Neck Eye Center in Kilmarnock.
Louis enjoyed the Northern Neck YMCA in Kilmarnock for many years. He developed a love for pickleball, and played often at the YMCA. He even was featured in the local newspaper as a noted player. He was often referred to as the “King of Pickleball” by his many friends at the YMCA.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. Family received friends an hour prior to the service. Interment was held at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lively.
In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage donations to the Northern Neck YMCA in Kilmarnock.
