Madison Boyd

Madison Boyd

MOLLUSK—Madison Boyd, 85, of Mollusk died surrounded by loved ones on April 12, 2020, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born February 23, 1935, to Madison Boyd Sr. and Annie Nelson Boyd in Nuttsville.

Madison accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, and after baptism joined Beulah Baptist Church. He married the late Delois Bishop in 1956, and in the early 1960s relocated his family to Falls Church. There, Madison worked at Bionetics Research Laboratories until the early 1970s when he started a heating and air conditioning business. This enterprise became the general contracting company he ran for 40 years in the D.C. metropolitan area.

On June 27, 1981, Madison married the late Vernell Gilbert Davis and the couple blended their families of five children each. He became an active member of First Baptist Church of Merrifield, where he served as a trustee. Madison and Vernell relocated to Lancaster County in 2005, where they united with Hartswell Baptist Church. In March 2020, he reunited with Beulah Baptist Church.

Madison felt compelled to intervene in the “school-to-prison” pipeline. He  started the 2nd Chances Ministry, a program of discipleship to help youth in the community by providing spiritual guidance and support  needed to become happy, productive contributors to society.

In 2014, he joined the division-wide tutoring program where he helped fourth grade students with math. At the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck in Kilmarnock, he taught conservation. He was also an active member of the NAACP, a coach for the church softball league and an instructor for Bible study.

If Madison wasn’t at home, or volunteering, one could likely find him on the river. He was a waterman and an avid fisherman. As a member of the Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association he worked on conservation and education efforts. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends and the many he served.

A viewing was held Friday, April 17, at Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home in Lancaster. Pastor Ulysses Turner officiated a private graveside service at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Saturday, April 18, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectively asks that donations be sent in Madison Boyd’s honor to the Northern Neck Baptist Association (NNBA) for the 2nd Chances Ministry to Attn: Deborah Thomas, NNBA, PO Box 158, Heathsville, VA 22473.
