Marie Y. Privette

NEWPORT NEWS—Marie Young Privette, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend of many, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2018, at the age of 85.

She was a lifelong resident of Newport News and graduated from Newport News High School, Class of 1950. Marie was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church and former member of Temple Baptist Church and First Baptist Church.

Marie was married to Joseph C. Ritchie for 30 years and later married Stephen B. Privette in 2000.

Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Stephen B. Privette; parents, Mary Nelms Staton and Charles Herbert Young; brothers, Arthur Bransford and James Letts; and sister, Jane Courtney Young.

She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Ritchie Davis (Hubbard); son, Joseph C. Ritchie Jr. (Joyce); sisters, Patricia Y. Mesic (Buster), Carol L. Fallin (Warren), Nancy S. Thomas (Steve), and Mary Lou S. Hudson (Garland); brothers, Raymond E. Staton (Karen) and Harry F. Letts; stepdaughters, Donna Privette, Carol Privette Miles (Ed), and stepson, Mark Privette; and two grandchildren, Joseph C. Ritchie, III (Shanna) and Kelley R. Giannotti (Chris).

Marie loved to be active, play tennis and dance whenever possible. She especially enjoyed going to the beach at Nags Head with her brothers and sisters and their families every year and being with friends at any occasion. She has a special place in her heart for the family and friends at North Riverside Baptist Church.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 22, at North Riverside Baptist Church with pastor Chris Kurtz. A reception will follow at the church. A special thank you to the staff at Warwick Gardens for their loving care. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
