Martha E. C. “Mardy” Dunn

Martha E. C. “Mardy” Dunn

ROANOKE—Martha Ellen Cowardin “Mardy” Dunn, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Roanoke.

Mardy was preceded in death by her husband of almost 68 years, William T. “Bill” Dunn. She is survived by three children, Patty (Mike), Teresa (Kevin) and Bill Jr. (Rosie); six grandchildren, Tyler (Barbara), Riley (Gabi), Kelsey (Erik), Rachael (Scotty), Bryce (Ana) and Corbin (Delaney); soon to be nine great-grandchildren; and her brother, Bill Cowardin. She is dearly loved and will be missed by all.

Mardy was born in Richmond and lived in Virginia all her life. She was the fourth child and only daughter of her parents, Pauline and John Cowardin. She was her father’s little princess, and (as she would say) “could do no wrong.” She attended the College of William & Mary for two years before meeting Bill on a blind date. They were married within six months and enjoyed many wonderful years together until Bill’s passing in 2021.

Mardy had a special connection to the Northern Neck. She vacationed with her family at Vir-Mar Beach growing up, and she and Bill would later create those same memories for their own children there. They eventually returned to Reedville to retire on the water.

She and Bill lived there for over 40 years and spent many happy summers boating, catching crabs off their dock, and sipping cocktails on their screened porch.

Mardy’s cooking was the center of many family gatherings. She was especially renowned for her pies, creamed chipped beef, homemade tomato juice (for Bloody Marys on Sundays after Mass) and onion rings with their secret ingredient. She was an expert crab picker and she and Bill enjoyed a multitude of crab dishes in the summer months.

Mardy and Bill had a love of traveling and took several cross-country and international trips. They spent many winters in Florida, always enjoying warmth and water.

Throughout her life Mardy enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, reading, crossword puzzles and listening to Lawerence Welk music. She was an avid football fan with a die-hard love of the Washington Redskins. Although she moved to an assisted living facility in Roanoke for her later years, she left her heart in the Northern Neck.

Mardy wanted to be remembered as a loving and caring mother who was always there for her family. A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity in Mardy’s name. Condolences may be shared with her family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
