VIENNA—It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Maurice Fernand Piller on September 21, 2023. He was 91 years old and passed away peacefully at his home in Vienna.
Maurice was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, to Fernand Piller and Louise Duboux Piller on April 5, 1932. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; and his three sons, Maurice “Chip” Jr. (Debby), Gregory (Janet) and Mark; along with his grandchildren, Christoper (Mairead), Melanie, John and Mary.
He lived a long and interesting life. He was in the Swiss military and served in Korea with the United Nations Supervisor Commission. He graduated from the Hotel School of Lausanne and became Maître D’ at the Coral Beach Club in Bermuda, and then moved to the USA and worked at the Tides Inn near Kilmarnock. That’s where he met his wife, Eleanor Christopher. He said that was a major turning point and the best thing in his life. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary on August 26.
From 1971 to 1986 he owned and operated a successful restaurant called the Cedar Inn in Vienna. It was truly a family business. Then he worked with cellular phones until he retired at age 74. He and Eleanor bought a cottage in White Stone and shared time in both Vienna and White Stone. Maurice had a zest for life, for people, for exercise and the game of bridge.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, September 25, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, in care of Theresa Bush, 335 Lively, VA 22503.
