WHITE STONE—Mildred Hart Martin of White Stone passed away peacefully on December 14, 2018, surrounded with love by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert R. Martin; parents, Jesse James and Starkie A. Hart; sisters, Frances H. Hatfield and Nell H. Alexander; and brothers, James A. Hart and William F. Hart.

She is survived by her brother, Robert R. Hart of Charlottesville; son, R. Ramsey and his wife, Rebekah Martin of Richmond; daughter, Margaret “Peggy” and her husband retired Lt. Col. Joseph Noland of Hampton; and granddaughter, Ashley Martin of Orlando, Fla.

Born in Goldsboro, N.C., on March 10, 1927, Mildred grew up in Franklin and Emporia before moving to Suffolk, where she met her future husband, Robert R. Martin. She worked for American Bank & Trust Co. with her sister Frances, and was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Mildred truly was a selfless individual, always putting others first. She loved socializing with friends and family, and had the unique ability to become friends with strangers in a matter of minutes. When she smiled, there was a sparkle in her eyes that lit up the room. Full of joy, Mildred was happiest when surrounded by her loved ones.

The family wishes to thank the fifth floor staff of doctors and nurses at Chippenham Hospital and James River Hospice for their compassionate care.

The family received visitors at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, at White Stone United Methodist Church, followed by the service at noon. Following the service there was a reception in the fellowship hall.

After the reception, family and guests departed for interment at Historic Christ Church in Weems.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Currie Funeral Home, LLC, handled the arrangements.
