‘Miss Piggy’ gets a face-lift for ‘Burn the Mortgage’ event

From left are “Miss Piggy” and her Tavern friends Penny Mace, Ben Green, Jim Linzi, Sid Mace and Mark Payne are getting ready for the “Burn the Mortgage” barbecue fundraiser from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, September 14, at Rice’s Hotel/ Hughlett’s Tavern, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville.

After nearly 30 years, “Miss Piggy,” the porcine smoker and barbecue ambassador for Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern (RH/HT) in Heathsville, has received a face lift.

She was created in 1992 by Sid and Penny Mace of Reedville, and their son Charlie Mace. After a short stint on the barbecue circuit, she spent many a good year resting in the shade of the barn, said Penny Mace.

Miss Piggy began an advertising career several years ago, promoting barbecue fundraisers at RH/HT. But this year, she looked a little tired, so Sid and Penny Mace spruced her up.

Look for “Miss Piggy” on Northumberland Highway in Heathsville, where she is promoting the “Burn the Mortgage” fundraiser on Saturday, September 14. Tickets are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door, which includes Sid Mace’s famous pulled pork barbecue, sausage and chicken, plus sides, appetizers and desserts. There will be a cash bar for beer and wine. Entertainment will be provided by the Richmond-based band, The Articles.

Advance tickets may be purchased at www.rhhtfoundationinc.org, or the Tavern Gift Shoppe, 73 Monument Place, Heathsville, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

With enough tickets sold, tavern volunteers will be able to “burn the mortgage” at this event, said Penny Mace.
