
WEEMS—Nancye P. Smither Morris of Weems quietly passed away at the age of 96 on February 18, 2025.
Nancye was born on November 29, 1928, on her grandfather’s farm in King George County, the youngest of three children to Willam and Louise Peed. After high school, Nancye attended Madison College (JMU) before getting her bachelor’s in education from Old Dominion University and then her master’s from William and Mary.
Nancye taught a third and fourth grade combination class at White Stone Elementary School for eight years before moving to Toano, where she taught third grade at Norge Elementary for 27 years. She also taught third grade for one year in Parkgate, England. On her summers off, Nancy traveled extensively to many parts of the world and the North American continent. She was a member of the DAR since 1964.
Nancye was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Morris; sister, Betty Peed Kellum; brother, William Maxwell Peed Jr.; and nephews, John “Jack” Thompson and Charles Kellum.
Nancye is survived by her two sons, Collin Smither (Amy) and Thomas Smither; two grandchildren, Benjamin Smither (Melanie) and Gretchen Spencer (Luke); two great-grandchildren, Maxwell Smither and Walter Smither. She is also survived by three nieces, Melinda May (Tom), Rebecca Finelli (Charles) and Patricia Kellum Carroll; two great nieces, Caroline Finelli and Annabelle Finelli; and two great-nephews, Kenneth May (Kellyn) and William May (Sarah).
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. A private burial was held at Hickory Neck Episcopal in Toano.
The family would like to recognize the wonderful care and compassion she received from the caregivers from Rappahannock-Westminster Canterbury At Home Service, her independent caregivers and Hospice of Virginia.
