The Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, recently announced the forthcoming release of Steamboats vs. U-Boats: The Story of Convoy Maniac, by maritime historian Jack Shaum.
This work will explore a little-known episode of World War II, when eight American steamboats—originally designed for the calm inland waters of bays and rivers—were hastily repurposed for Atlantic convoy duty despite the threat of German U-boats, reported museum manager Andee Pevahouse.
