No wake zone ordinance is making headway in Northumberland County

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland planning commission is calling on the board of supervisors to codify the county’s policy regarding no wake zones.

After a public hearing and related discussion, the commission on Thursday, March 18, revised and recommended a proposed no wake zone ordinance to the supervisors for approval, 8-0. District 1 members Chris Cralle and Edwin King, District 2 members Patrick O’Brien and Wellington Shirley Jr., District 4 members Alfred Fisher Jr. and Roger McKinley and District 5 members Heidi Wilkins-Corey and Charles Williams all voted in favor of the measure. District 3 members Vivian Diggs and Garfield Parker were absent.

County planner Stuart McKenzie explained changes were prompted by “several no wake applications in the county from citizens and citizen organizations” and administration and staff “saw the need to establish criteria” for people to request no wake zones.

All we’re trying to do is to educate citizens on how to request a state-recognized no wake zone,” he said. “There may have been some confusion that we were trying to create a local ordinance to create local county no wake zones. That is not the intention….
