The Region 1A football champion and undefeated Essex Trojans placed seven on the Northern Neck all-district first team and claimed two of the three top spots on the honor squad.
Senior linebacker Bryan Roane was named the district defensive player of the year and Todd Jones, who has led EHS to a 13-0 mark so far this season, was named the coach of the year. Essex claimed the Region 1A title Saturday, November 25, with a 54-26 win over Northumberland and will host Altavista in the Class 1 semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2.
Roane also filled a spot on the first-team defense along with teammates lineman Xzayviia Bundy and Zion Darby, and linebacker Avontre’ Johnson. The Trojans placed three on the first-team offense in center Tristan Marshall, lineman Daniel Walker and running back Jaden Holmes. Holmes led the district in rushing with 1,242 yards on 93 carries for a 138 yards per game average during the regular season.
Northumberland, which finished as the region runner-up, led the first team postseason honor squads in number of selections with seven spots on the offense and seven on the defense….
