Northumberland boards reach formal agreement on oversight of school finances

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland board of supervisors and school board on Tuesday, June 17, formalized their agreement to have the county take over the school’s finances, despite some disagreement over the handling of two school financial positions.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was approved 5-0 by supervisors and 4-1 by the school board, with Denise Mazyck voting against.

The agreement comes after both boards met in April and agreed to formalize the arrangement. County attorney Eric Gregory said the MOU “was created with your input and guidance” to “focus on financial services the county would be providing to the school board, the transition of the school board financial management staff to the county and for the county to hire a finance director to oversee those staff members.”

School board member Dana O’Bier was opposed to making two positions—accounts payable clerk and payroll clerk—county positions. The MOU states the positions would be on a minimum 90-day trial….
