HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland County Circuit Court convened August 14, with the Hon. R. Michael McKenney presiding.

New counsel was appointed in the case of Rice M. Tawan of Heathsville, charged with one felony count of manufacturing a controlled substance. Tawan’s trial is set for September 25.

New counsel was appointed in the case of Nathaniel J. Turner, no address listed, charged with one felony count of manufacturing a controlled substance. Turner’s trial is set for October 30.

New counsel was appointed in the case of Deandre W. Veney of Fredericksburg, charged with three misdemeanor counts for the sale and distribution of marijuana. Veney’s trial was continued to September 11.

A status hearing was held on the case of Donte J. Carter of Heathsville, charged with one misdemeanor count of violating a protective order. Carter’s case was continued to September 11.

The trial of Troy L. Carter of Lottsburg, charged with five felonies including two counts of the sale and distribution of marijuana and three counts of the manufacture of controlled substances, was continued to January 22.

The trial of Kayla B. Chatham of Callao, charged with four felonies including one count of distributing drugs to a minor and three counts of carnal knowledge/statutory rape without force on a victim ages 13-14, was continued to October 30.

Jonathon A. Towles, of Lancaster, charged with two felony counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer, entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to serve one year in jail, nine months of which were suspended.
