HEATHSVILLE—Public access to Northumberland waters has been long-discussed and at its August 15 meeting, the planning commission dusted off a 2004 plan to enhance public access at Hampton Hall Landing at the Northumberland / Westmoreland county line.
The commission was directed by supervisors to look at developing the 3.29 acre parcel on Hampton Hall Creek. The original plan, prepared for a grant application that was not awarded, called for a small gravel road and turn-around leading to six parking spaces including one for handicap parking, and a floating canoe/kayak launch platform. At that time, plans did not call for a deceleration lane, but discussion regarding the 55 mph zone and the curve on the Northumberland side of Hampton Hall Road suggested there might be a need for one.
“It is a downhill curve and there is 280 feet to the property line, so we have the room if we need it,” said county planner Stuart McKenzie.
Commission member John Kost said “it makes sense to contact VDOT first” because of the cost for a deceleration lane….
