Northumberland planning commission continues livestock, solar facility reviews

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland County Planning Commission has been tasked by the board of supervisors to develop some guidance when it comes to a growing number of conditional use permit requests for livestock animals on residential waterfront property (R2). At the planning commission meeting on May 20, local residents came out on both sides of the issue.

Mary Barna, president of the Greenfield Harbour Property Owners Association, told the commission that “possibly expanding current zoning usage rules for R2 communities” to include some livestock is a concern since people have tried to “raise chickens and other livestock in our community,” which is against the community covenants. Those state that only “dogs, cats and other household pets” are allowed. “Changing the current rules….
