Northumberland schools present $19.7 million budget to supervisors

HEATHSVILLE—Northumberland school superintendent Holly Wargo on April 23 presented the district’s proposed $19,745,012 budget for fiscal 2020-21 to the board of supervisors.

The proposed budget represents an increase of $850,807, or 4.65%, over the current school budget. Estimated expenditures include increases of $386,472 for school instruction, $268,003 for administration and health, $175,848 for transportation funds, $46,548 for operations and maintenance, and $8,167 in technology costs, as well as a savings of $34,231 for debt service.

As presented by Wargo, the proposed budget includes a 3% raise in employee salaries for a total increase of $736,419. Due to legislation passed by the General Assembly, Virginia public schools are required to increase teacher and staff salaries by at least 5% by the end of the 2021-22 school year.
