Some 30 players participated in the Paddle by the Bay pickleball tournament August 10 at the Northern Neck Family YMCA in Kilmarnock. The tournament was sponsored by the American Red Cross, Rappahannock Chapter, and proceeds will benefit operations of the chapter.
The tournament, which was originally going to utilize courts at both Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club (ICYCC) and the YMCA, was organized by Porter Washington and Mason Washington. Patricia Wolfrey was the Red Cross representative who helped make sure the tournament happened.
Because of a lower-than-expected number of participants, only one facility was needed.
“We really appreciate both facilities allowing the use of the courts for a great cause,” said George Christoforatos, ICYCC director of racquet sports. “We had so many great matches and responses from players I’m sure we will get more participation next year.”
The draws included 4.0 men’s and women’s brackets, along with 3.0 men, 4.0 mixed doubles and 3.0 mixed doubles brackets. All teams were ages 50 and above….
