KILMARNOCK—The Town of Kilmarnock will honor the late Joe Curry by renaming the playground on Waverly Avenue the Joe Curry Memorial Park.
Council member Rebecca Nunn on March 19 moved to rename the playground. Council member Michael Sutherland seconded the motion. It passed unanimously, 6-0, with support from members Keith Butler, Betsy Crowther, Emerson Gravatt, Dr. Curtis Smith, Sutherland and Nunn.
“I am just so happy that we are having the park in Joe Curry’s name. He was such a wonderful resident of our county and did so much,” said mayor Mae Umphlett.
A ceremony commemorating the renaming will be held at 10 a.m. April 28.
In other action, council noted a concern about hunting in the vicinity of the YMCA Wiley Child Development Center on Harris Road.
At a recent police/public safety/emergency preparedness committee meeting, town manager Tom Saunders said an incident there caused a lockdown at the center although hunters were hunting legally with permission from the property owner…
