Raiders advance in state baseball tourney

Slade Keyser fired 112 pitches, looking just as strong on the last as he did the first, to fan 12 batters and allow six hits for a complete game win for Rappahannock last Thursday as the Raiders beat Lancaster, 6-1, for the Region 1A championship and a home berth in this week’s Class 1 state tournament.

The Raiders beat Buffalo Gap, 2-1, in a Class 1 state quarterfinal game Tuesday and Rappahannock County defeated Lancaster, 6-3, in another quarterfinal game. The loss ended the Red Devils’ season, while Richmond County advanced to a semifinal game against Grayson County at 10 a.m. tomorrow, June 10, in Salem. The state championship is Saturday, June 11, in Salem.

Lancaster and Richmond County had split games during the regular season but it was the host Raiders who prevailed when bragging rights, a trophy and a home field advantage in the state tourney were on the line….
