Rappahannock High School, unbeaten at 10-0 to claim the regular season Northern Neck District football championship for the first time since 1986, garnered the three top honors on the all-district team.
Rappahannock juniors Kenneth Madison and Chase Self were named the offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively, while William West was chosen as the coach of the year. Madison, who also filled a spot as a running back on the district’s offensive first team, led the league in rushing with 1,805 yards for 34 touchdowns and three two-point conversions. Self also filled a spot on the defensive first team as a linebacker.
As expected Rappahannock and Essex, which avenged its only loss of the regular season to the Raiders by shutting out Rappahannock, 41-0, last Saturday in the Region 1A championship, led the selections to the two first teams with a combined 20 players.
Essex will play in the Class 1 state semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, at Altavista. The winner will advance to the state championship on December 14.
