Rappahannock wins state softball championship

Rappahannock High’s softball team brought the state trophy back to the Northern Neck for a second time in four years last Saturday with a 5-1 win over Auburn in the VHSL Class 1 state championship game.

The Lady Raiders last won the state crown in 2014.

Rappahannock handed Auburn its first loss of the season at Radford University last weekend, sending the Eagles home with a 25-1 record.

Although Auburn posted 351 runs this season for a new VHSL single-season record, Rappahannock held the Eagles to one run behind the pitching duo of sophomore right-hander Caroline Davenport and junior left-hander Rilee Baughan. Davenport gave up only two runs in the first four innings…
