Record field participates in 25th Irvington Turkey Trot

A record 779 runners on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27, took part in the 25th Irvington Turkey Trot and Animal Rescue Donation Drive, according to Michelle Lybarger of the Irvington Village Improvement Association, which organizes the annual event.

It was a big day for Cole Shugart, 27, of Richmond, who swept both races, winning the two-mile race in 10:08 and the five-mile race in 27:59. This also was a repeat win for Shugart who won the two-mile last year.

In the two-mile, Shugart beat out Gunnar Marston, 17, Heathsville who placed second with a time of 11:12 and Warren Waddell, 51, of Moon who placed third with a time of 11:46. Caroline Lay, 24, of Irvington was the top female finisher with a time of 12:56. The oldest runner, Bill Broaddus, 83, of Midlothian, crossed the finish line with a time of 27:23.

In the five-mile, Shugart out paced Matthew Kane, 19, of Lancaster who placed second with a time of 28:39 and Luke Vrouwenvelder, 30, of Charlottesville who….
