Despite some big plays the Red Devils couldn’t overcome a first-quarter deficit, losing the home opener, 35-22, to Surry in varsity football on September 5.

The Cougars held Lancaster to 105 yards of total offense, including 65 rushing and 40 in the air. Two of the Devils’ touchdowns came on big plays with quarterback Porter Pittman breaking for a 60-yard run down the left side late in the first quarter. Pittman had set up his own score with a nine-yard carry and a 15-yard Surry penalty tacked on.
