Red Devils place third in Class 1 golf tournament

After going unbeaten and claiming back-to-back Northern Neck District and Region 1A trophies, the Lancaster High School golf team fell for the first time in the Class 1 state championships.

Auburn, led by individual medalist Matthew Altizer, scored a team low 301 to win the state championship. Altizer was 2-under-par 69 as the individual champion.

Smith Mountain Lake Academy was the Class 1 runner-up with a score of 315 and the Lancaster top four scorers shot a combined 327 for third. Northumberland, the regional runner-up, finished sixth with a 350.

Tyler Brent led Lancaster to finish sixth in individual scoring. He was 6-over with a 77.
