Ret. U.S. Navy Capt. Dr. Thomas L. Walker

LYNCHBURG—Thomas L. Walker, DDS, 67, of Lynchburg passed away peacefully on October 11, 2020, after a valiant five-year battle with cancer. Tom was born in Ames, Iowa, to Dr. Leon W. Walker and Thelma M. Walker.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Rice Walker; daughter, Stacy A. Crawford (Clay); beloved grandson, Chase; his sister, Mary Thompson (Mike) of Austin, Texas; brother, William Walker (Camilla) of Boulder, Colo.; brother-in-law, John D. Rice Jr. of White Stone; and sister-in-law, Rita A. Walters (Larry) of Chesterfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Leon Walker and Thelma M. Walker; and his grandparents, T.T. Lee and Olive Lee.

Tom became a dentist following in his father’s footsteps. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and his DDS from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

He was recruited in college by the Navy, which resulted in a 20-year career. The Navy sponsored his endodontic specialization at The University of Texas-San Antonio. His final Navy assignment was teaching at the Navy Dental School in Bethesda, Md.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Tom settled in Lynchburg, where he opened his own endodontic practice serving the residents of Lynchburg and the surrounding communities for 15 years.

Tom was an avid fan of Iowa State and University of Iowa sports, especially football. He attended games whenever he could get back to Iowa.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm, Saturday, October 17, with service to follow at 2 p.m. at Currie Funeral Home.

Interment will be private.
