Robert E. McCarthy

HARRISONBURG—Robert Eldon “Bob” McCarthy, 93, of Harrisonburg passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at White Birch Estates.

Bob was born in Hardin, Mont., on February 19, 1924. He was a son of the late Paul and Edna (Larsen) McCarthy. He was raised in Wyoming, and following his time in the service made his home in Vienna. Upon his retirement he moved to Kilmarnock, where he pursued his passion for fishing and boating.

Bob was a systems analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense Intelligence Agency. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Bob received his bachelor’s from the University of Wyoming, and his master’s from University of Nebraska.

He was united in marriage on March 25, 1953, to Jean Lois (Condon) McCarthy, who preceded him in death on December 24, 2015.

Bob was a wise and compassionate man who will be missed by his three daughters, Diane McCarthy, of Harrisonburg, Janet McCarthy Grimm (Steve), of Greenwich, Conn., and Carolyn McCarthy, of Purcellville; six grandchildren, Rebecca Chandler (Craig D’Andrea), Kevin Chandler, Sarah Grimm, Chelsea Grimm, Jonathan McCarthy and Stephanie Barnett; and one great-grandson, Rory D’Andrea. He also leaves behind longtime caregiver and friend, Rhonda Fisher (Scotty) who provided endless support and compassion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother, Don McCarthy.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 13, at the Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater with the Rev. Marlene Chandler officiating. The family received friends following the memorial service.
