School board sends proposed $20.9 million budget to Northumberland County supervisors

CLARAVILLE—Following a public hearing on Monday, March 14, the Northumberland school board voted to approve a $20,911,890 budget for next year as proposed by superintendent Holly Wargo and director of finance Jason Bellows.

School board members Denise Mazyck, Betty Christopher, Gayle Sterrett, Cheryl Davis and Dana O’Bier voted in favor of the motion, making it a unanimous 5-0 decision.

Several citizens participated in the hearing.

Lynn Stuart shared a speech she previously read at a board of supervisors meeting noting problems with the format and delivery of the proposed budget. Stewart referenced Virginia Code 15.2-2504 which describes what budgets are supposed to show. According to the code, opposite each item of the contemplated expenditure, “the budget shall show in separate parallel columns the aggregate amount appropriated during the preceding fiscal year.”
