HEATHSVILLE—Tensions among Northumberland supervisors and school board members may be on the rise again based on supervisor comments made at the Thursday, December 14, meeting, suggesting “consequences” and possibly changes in how the school board members are chosen in reaction to the handling of finances within the school district.
During the school board’s presentation, two supplemental appropriations were requested. The board unanimously approved the first: a supplemental appropriation of $273,368 for the All In VA grant to cover tutoring, required reading textbooks and attendance incentives. School finance director Tara Booth said 50%, $136,684, would go toward tutoring; 40%, $109,347, toward the new textbooks, and 10%, $27,337 towards boosting attendance.
However, in a 4-1 vote, a second appropriation of $487,585.39 was moved to the January meeting in order to get more information regarding the fiscal years being affected and advice from the auditors….
