Smith Point Sea Rescue receives national recognition

REEDVILLE—Members of Smith Point Sea Rescue (SPSR) recently were honored for their 50 years of service to the community with the Ready Communities Partnership National Service Award. The award was presented to Smith Point Sea Rescue on Friday, November 22, at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum.

During the presentation of the award to SPSR president Pete Ortiz, District 1 Rep. Rob Wittman thanked the group “on behalf of a grateful nation,” adding, “Smith Point Sea Rescue is a pillar of volunteerism and a true lifeline for boaters and fishermen on the Chesapeake Bay. I’m proud to present this award and thank Smith Point Sea Rescue for their incredible service to our community and for being an inspiration to us all.”

Ortiz said the organization’s longevity is “due to community support. This award may say Smith Point Sea Rescue, but more accurately it would say the community of Northumberland County.”
