Stephen H. “Skip” Miller II

MILA—Stephen Howard “Skip” Miller II of Mila passed away January 1, 2025.

Born in Kingston, Pa., on June 5, 1935, he was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Gretchen Miller. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Sirles and Sally Savage; a brother, Clinton “Joey” Miller; and a grandson, Thomas McCauley.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret Ann “Maggie” Hudnall Miller; three daughters, Ann McCauley (Rob MacGillivray), Gretchen Svitko (Drew) and Stephanie Spahlinger (Matt); three grandsons, William (Christine Persun), Stephen and Peter Svitko; a sister, Susan Mountcastle (Jack); and many nieces and nephews.

While an infant, Skip moved to Richmond, where he grew up, attending Westhampton Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson High School. He went on to graduate from Virginia Tech, with a degree in architectural engineering.

Skip’s career began at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. He then went to work for Texaco where he stayed for over 35 years, moving to Raleigh, N.C., Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke, Medford, N.J., Houston, Texas, and Cherry Hill, N.J., finally retiring to Northumberland County.

Skip was a car enthusiast and early in their marriage, he and Maggie often competed in sports car rallies. He enjoyed tinkering and had a true knack for fixing things, often using those talents to help others. He liked boating, fishing and remained a dedicated Hokies fan throughout his life.

Skip’s family wants to express their sincere gratitude to the kind and caring staff at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury where he lived the final years of his life. Their compassion was a tremendous comfort and is greatly appreciated.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 10, at Mila Methodist Church with internment at Mila Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service and a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mila Methodist Church (c/o Brenda Minnick, PO Box 112, Wicomico Church, VA 22579) or Mila Cemetery (c/o E. A.
